Hair Loss Causes

With correct diagnosis, many people suffering from hair loss can be helped.

Normal Hair Growth

About 90 percent of a person's scalp hair is continually growing, a phase that lasts between two and six years. Ten percent is in a resting phase that lasts between two and three months. Shedding 50 to 100 hairs a day is considered normal.

Scalp hair grows about one-half inch a month. Hair is mostly made up of keratin, the same material found in fingernails and toenails.

Causes of Abnormal Hair Loss

Abnormal hair loss can be due to many different causes. People who notice their hair shedding in large amounts, or whose hair becomes thinner or falls out, should consult a dermatologist.

Possible causes include alopecia areata, trichotillomania, cancer treatment drugs, hereditary thinning, childbirth, fever or severe infection, thyroid disease, inadequate protein, medications, birth control pills, low iron, major surgery, chronic illness, ringworm of the scalp, and improper hair care.

Care and Support

Most hair shedding is due to the normal hair cycle, but dramatic thinning deserves medical attention. Once you understand the cause, you can choose supportive options with more confidence.
